It is ironic that I am watching a documentary about social media addiction on netflix, which is again an addiction platform.
Of course Netflix is different from social media. 1) Netflix is a paid service. Netflix is not serving users with third party ads or recommendations. 2) We make a decision to see Netflix by paying for subscription. Hence user is not the product unlike in free social media services. You stop paying, you lose access to the service.
‘if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product’
Many say ‘I am different, I am not addicted’. You will be surprised to see how much time you spend on social media, if you actually measure time with tools like rescue time. (I measured few years back. I was shocked)
You will understand how deep the social media companies go to “extract your attention”. These companies are in the business of “mining your attention”
Also in the documentary at the start of the credits the creators mocks us by saying ” follow us on social media. We are kidding ! “
But when I went to their website, they are using social media channels anyway.
While we hope The Social Dilemma will inspire people to spark conversations “IRL”, we believe it is especially important to reach people where they need to hear it most – on social media.
In service of that goal, we plan to use social media to advance our impact campaign while adopting and modeling the principles of humane technology. Our focus will be on getting the film out to new audiences that might not otherwise seek it out, increasing the public’s understanding of the dilemma faced by our increased reliance on technologies that have become exploitative and extractive, and providing tools and resources to realign our relationship with these platforms.
For what is worth ‘the social dilemma’ is a must watch. It makes you think, reflect and adjust.
‘The social dilemma’ is a must watch. It left me shaking my head on a Saturday. I already made steps to scrape whatever time spent on social media. In fact it got me thinking about deleting some accounts for good.
The attention extraction business model is not a healthy way for humanity. You need to watch this amazingly curated documentary.

A social service organisation dug up a drinking water well right in the middle of a very remote village.The team was so happy they could provide clean water to villagers. Before this new well, villagers used to travel 5 kilometres to fetch water. Donor agency was happy too. They came, launched the well with a ceremony, took smiling pictures with villagers and left. A month later the team was baffled to witness that no one is using the well. They found why. Husbands of the village used to paddle early in the morning in their cycles to fetch water. Not just water, but also to fetch the daily dose of village gossip. The well 5 kilometres away was the meeting point for husbands of neighbouring villages. Social interaction trumped convenience.
Question: Did the social service organisation fail to do the community needs assessment right ?
Another question : Why employees in 2020 spectacularly misuse the opportunity given by their employers to work from home. ?
There were 4 stages of industrial revolution. 1765 – First Industrial Revolution – because of steam engine. 1870 – Second Industrial Revolution – because of new sources of energy: electricity, gas, and oil, and inventions: internal combustion engine, telegraph and telephone. 1969 – Third Industrial Revolution – because of electronics, telecommunications and computers. after 2000 – Fourth Industrial revolution ( Industry 4.0) because of high speed internet driving innovations in artificial intelligence, internet of things, smart phones and many many advances in tech every month. Industry 4.0 defines how we live, trade and work in a way we fail to understand. It’s changing too fast.
Industry 4.0 is mostly digital. Digital laughs at the world long gone in analog. Industry 4.0 creates millions of jobs, while eating up existing jobs.
See below video and reflect whether your child is learning the skills explained in this video. Those skills are already in demand, not in future.
Now the biggest issue is our education systems: starting from school to university. We are still feeding youth to an education system introduced in 1940’s which produced employees able to work in Second Industrial Revolution. In Plain speak, that education system produced people good for work in factories and admin work in 1940’s !
Isn’t it crazy to think that we are still using a 100 years old methodology to educate our youth? Why do you want your child to be caged in 1940’s when you can easily give him access to education that will help him thrive in new jobs created ?
The sticky obstacles: It’s a mind game. -Getting your child to a reputed school is a status update. New jobs laugh at our obsession with the status play. – Getting A’s in exams is still a sign of intelligence. Artificially Intelligent machines are laughing at your obsession. Your child is obsolete, even before he steps in to the school.
We want to follow our passion through our jobs.
My passion is not your passion. It’s an individual unique feature. And passion changes and evolves with our age.
How can an organization cater for this ever changing needs of each and every individual? Organisations simply can’t do that. Not even Google.
So then how can you follow your passion?
Job is there to make you safe and sound. To give you some worth and financial safety.
Find your passion in your own time. Make time for it.
(Cut time from social media scrolling, binging TV series, games, anything that is an addiction in your life).
Not having time for your passion is a lie we tell our selves over and over.
The excitement and energy generated through spending time on your passion trickles in to work and family. Vice versa.
That’s a good deal.
In the morning I have done 2 hours of undisturbed work, Then took a break and followed up with another 3 hours of undisturbed work. I got so many things done. With in the process I have created my own framework for the GV-SPRINT which can be used in any number of days up to 5. That is something. Which means I am all good to facilitate a SPRINT workshop in any time frame, even with multiple groups. I even had the time to revamp the slide deck. All feel refreshed and reinvented. Guess I found my flow.
Seems easy, but had to do many things. 1) All the to-do lists were pushed for the next day to clear up the mind to focus on this one thing, with out any guilt. 2) Kept the phone on silent mode for the entire time. 3) Did not pick up the phone even in the break 4) All 5 hours were spent on one area of work. So mind was free to work deep. 5) Though I used the laptop, I used it with wifi off. When I wanted few resources to refer, I connected to internet and switched off again. 6) No social media, no emails.
Have you flip through business magazines and news papers with dozens of PR articles, but never stop to check what’s in them ? You are not alone. It is not just because they are boring, we all know they are lies biased. 1) The articles project organisations as places that did no wrong, not doing any wrong and will not do any wrong. We all know that is just fairy tale. ( Even fairy tales have demons to whack) 2) The leader of the organisation quotes lot of statistics to prove his point : ” my organisation is the best”. Numbers make people yawn. 3) Social media have dug up the dark side of organisations. People know. Shareholders know.
The opportunity in PR articles is to tell a honest story about what they are doing well against the challenges and competition. People love to hear a story.
Isn’t this manipulation ? No. People will know a honest story when they hear it.
Many organisations have called themselves digital before Covid19.
The pandemic identified all our camouflages.
These organisations had some of their marketing in digital but all other aspects were stuck in analog.They had the shock of their lives in 2020.Going forward now, we have the question in front of us: are we going back to what it was ?
Are we stepping back on the digital initiatives we have taken because we were forced during the pandemic?
Are we going to cancel the work from home because now we can come to office ?Nothing will make us prepared for the future, if digital is stuck in marketing. We need to move digital from marketing to the business model.If digital is not rooted in the business model, we can safely say, we are doing business as usual.
Getting to know Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi ( Let’s just call him Mihaly and forget the surname 🙂 ) was a life changer.
Who is Mihaly ?
(From positive psychology) Mihaly became a happiness researcher because of the adversity he faced growing up. He was a prisoner during World War II, and he witnessed the pain and suffering of the people around him during this time. As a result, he developed a curiosity about happiness and contentment.
He observed that many people were unable to live a life of contentment after their jobs, homes, and security were lost during the war. After the war, he took an interest in art, philosophy, and religion as a way to answer the question, What creates a life worth living?
What is FLOW? Mihaly coined the term “flow state” because many of the people he interviewed described their optimal states of performance as instances when their work simply flowed out of them without much effort.
He explains flow state in detail in his book ‘Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience’ I read parts of the book and many articles and happily used those insights in my life. But to be honest, nothing beats the 18 minutes below. This is his TED talk.
It’s happening all around us. Jobs are vanishing. Yet many jobs are created fresh in new areas we have not heard before.
Advancing yourself with in an organisation as a ladder is not sustainable. Not desirable by employees as well.
Skills will not make you safe.
The correct mindset will supersede your existing skill set. If you think your skills are static and you only have this much of strengths, you need to have a new mindset. Only the mindset fixed on curiosity and wanting to ride the new changes will upgrade them selves frequently. Like it or not, everybody out there is now required to act like a businessman. Even when you work inside an organisation.
Anything you want to learn is available here and now, on your mobile phone. What is missing ? Your attention.
You might have thousands of connections in your social media accounts. You might be going to networking events. Who will succeed are not necessarily the ones who have huge number of connections. The one who create meaningful actual collaborations starting with few people will thrive. The best marketing is the referral from a satisfied customer.
